2004 Classes

Spring 2004: "Introduction to Brick Masonry" taught by Norman "Chubby" Garrett, co-sponsored by Local #1 of the Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers. This was the Pythagoras School’s first class. In this class held on weekends over six weeks, Chubby Garret instructed ten students in how to construct brick arch window frames. The class was held at the old Westham Station in Richmond. Chubby Garrett is a fourth generation Richmond master brick mason, and one of his ancestors was the first brick mason in Jamestown. Among Chubby’s many notable projects, he helped build Richmond’s All Saints Episcopal Church and Reveille Methodist Church and re¬stored the Gun Foundry at the Tredegar Iron Works. His father and grandfather helped in the restoration of Stratford Hall in the 1920s amidst their booming practice in the first half of the twentieth century.
